Computing and ICT

"Any fool can use a computer. Many do." - Anonymous

Student View

"ICT is an amazing lesson and I enjoy every moment of it, I started this year not knowing a thing about computers and now I am confident enough to say I know a lot about them"

"I chose BTEC ICT as I knew I wanted to work in business when I left school.  ICT gives me the skills I need to carry out the tasks businesses expect from their employees"

"In sixth form, I chose ICT so that I could experience a course that covers both ICT and computing.  I like the flexibility the course gives me with my options now and in the future."

Overview

In computing and ICT we love being able to impart knowledge, skills and experience to our students.  We consistently demonstrate a passion for the subject and show an enthusiasm for something students may one day be working on in the field.  It is great to know that the journey began in our classrooms.  ICT and computing are hugely relevant subjects and ones that will have an impact in all forms of future study.

Examination

At key stage 4 students can study AQA GCSE computing.  It is focused on programming and creating different forms of software through practical based coursework.  This is complimented by a final examination covering theoretical concepts.

Students can also choose BTEC First Award in ICT, which covers 4 units (3 coursework, 1 examination).  The units are focused on the use of ICT in business, the internet and computer hardware.

Within the sixth form, we offer the Level 3 BTEC National Diploma or Subsidiary Diploma in ICT.  This course follows either a computing, programming or ICT pathway depending on each student’s preference and choice of units.

Extra-curricular/OSL opportunities

At key stage 4 and 5, we can support students with coursework and help them to develop more advanced skills in preparation for higher level courses or to push for an A grade!
