Olympic Torch comes to The North School

I am delighted to be able to confirm that the Olympic torch relay will visit the North School on Wednesday 18th July. This is a wonderful opportunity for the students and demonstrates the high regard the London Ogranising Committee Olympic Games (LOCOG), Kent County Council and Ashford Borough Council have for the North School and that they trust us to be able to manage the celebration as the Olympic torch relay travels through Ashford .

Visitors flock to North School Lambing Weekend

The annual lambing weekend at the North school farm took place on 24^th & 25^th March and was attended by over 2000 visitors. The attractions included lamb feeding, pond dipping, reptile and small mammal talks, duckling handling, spring crafts and other stalls and attractions. We were fortunate to have good weather in which to showcase our Beef Shorthorn and Devon cattle herds. The students led their animals in a cattle parade where they were introduced to the public and they demonstrated the skills and techniques that they use in showing classes at various agricultural shows throughout the year.

Climbing £5.00 11.00am—12.00pm (2nd—5th April only)

Easter crafts, Eco Club & pond dipping 11.00am—3.00pm

£6.00 per day. Bring a packed lunch.

Prices include a tour around our farm and

a chance to meet some of our animals and reptiles.

The North School joins Waste Week 12th – 18th March

As part of our continued work with Eco Schools, The North School will be taking part in Waste Week during 12^th – 18^th March. Students will be discussing how waste impacts on their environment and looking at ways that waste around the school can be reduced.

The North School already has Silver Eco School status. It is hoped that through continued work we will be able to apply for the Green Flag Award later this year.

The North School Climbing Wall

The North School climbing wall will be opening the first Saturday of each month. The next opening will be on Saturday 5^th May. Opening times will be from 2.00pm – 6.00pm. The wall will be open for registered climbers only. New climbers will need to attend on a Monday between 6.00pm – 10.00pm to be assessed.

Entry £6 adults £4 children.

Lambing Weekend 24th & 25th March

The North School Farm’s largest annual open event takes place on 24^th & 25^th March.

Visitors will be able to see our new born lambs, chicks and calves as well as being able to take part in activities such as archery, climbing and pond dipping. Farm staff will be on hand to give talks and demonstrations about all of the farm’s animals including, Devon and shorthorn cattle, Texel sheep, rabbits, degu as well as reptiles including snakes, lizards, terrapins and axolotl.

Other entertainment will include Native American Indians, rodeo bull and lamb feeding.

The farm will be open from 10.00am – 3.00pm each day. Entrance is £2 for adults and £1 for children. For more details about the weekend please call Mrs Karen Little on 01233 614630.

INSPECTION OF THE NORTH SCHOOL BY OFSTED

We have just been informed that Ofsted will inspect the school on the 21st and 22nd March.

If you are a registered parent or carer of a student at the school Ofsted are interested to know what you and your child think is good about the school, as well as anything that you would like to be improved. You can tell Ofsted your views by filling in the questionnaire that will be sent home with the students today.

HOMEWORK

Following requests from parents, homework is now recorded weekly within each Faculty of Learning section of the website.

To access the information parents and carers will need to open the individual faculty page, scroll down to the homework section, identify the class teacher with the correct class-code and finally read the homework that is set. All students have been allocated an up to date timetable (7^th November) to copy into their planner and take home today.

There are three columns of work that have been identified. Column 1 is the homework that has been set. Column 2 is extension work to the homework to provide additional work that should be completed to help improve learning and Column 3 is additional work that could be completed at any time to enable students to research topics, extend their knowledge or revise for future topics or examinations.

Please note it is the school’s policy to set homework and inform parents and carers if it is not being completed.

Supervised homework sessions are available everyday both before and after school in the Learning Resource Centre. Students who wish to join one of these sessions should see Mrs Houghton, the school Librarian upon arrival and sign in.

If parents or carers would like their child to attend supervised homework sessions please contact the appropriate Head of Community.
