The North School’s prime responsibility is to provide for the academic, personal and social development of our students. We aim to ensure that each student receives not only a broad and balanced education relevant to his or her ability, but is also able to enjoy dynamic and stimulating learning experiences. Our motto “Vision into Reality” meets the challenge of lifelong learning to enable each student to achieve his or her ambitions.
We set high academic standards and aim to stretch all of our students. We provide the opportunity to join a “Fast Track” for the most able and provide a wide range of individual programmes to support all students. Express groups are expected to work at the same pace as their peers in selective schools. Our setting arrangements are also flexible to allow students who are gifted in one area, but may need additional help in another, to work at the appropriate level across the whole curriculum.
A key factor in the school’s continuing rise in standards and achievement is an outstanding curriculum that is tailored well to the individual needs of its students. Extensive enrichment activities enhance the opportunities provided so that students have a range of exciting sporting or creative activities in which to develop their skills and interests.
The North School is an 11-19 day high school with a growing sixth form. It has a maximum annual intake of 215 boys and girls and is over-subscribed. Courses of study are provided according to individual needs for GCSE or BTEC and at GCE A Level, A/S Level and BTEC leading to admission to universities or specialist professional training.
Students are admitted in accordance with the Local Authority, Kent County Council, admissions code which organises the secondary transfer process and other admission arrangements. If you live in the Kent Local Authority area and you would like your child to start at The North School you must complete the Kent Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF) either online through the Kent website (www.kent.gov.uk/ola) or on paper.
Attention is drawn to the county council’s arrangements for help with travel. Offers of places will be sent to a maximum of 215 applicants. In recent years the average number of applications has been in excess of this figure.
If the number of preferences for the school is more than the number of places available, places will be allocated in the following priority order:–
Children in Local Authority Care:– a child under the age of 18 years for whom the local authority provides accommodation by agreement with their parents/carers (Section 22 of the Children Act 1989) or who ceased to be so because they were adopted or who is the subject of a care order under Part IV of the Act.
Current Family Association: – a brother or sister attending the school when the child starts. In this context brother or sister means children who live as brother or sister in the same house, including natural brothers or sisters, adopted siblings, stepbrothers or sisters and foster brothers and sisters. If siblings from multiple births (twins, triplets, etc.) apply for a school and the school would reach its Published Admission Number (PAN) after admitting one or more, but before admitting all of those siblings, the LA will offer a place to each of the siblings, even if doing so takes the school above its PAN
Health and Special Access Reasons: – Medical / Health and Special Access Reasons will be applied in accordance with the school’s legal obligations, in particular those under the Equality Act 2010. Priority will be given to those children whose mental or physical impairment means they have a demonstrable and significant need to attend a particular school. Equally this priority will apply to children whose parents’/guardians’ physical or mental health or social need means there is a demonstrable and significant need for their child to attend a particular school. Such claims will need to be supported by written evidence from a suitably qualified medical or other practitioner who can demonstrate a special connection between these needs and the particular school.
Children who live nearer to The North School than any other maintained non selective secondary school or academy: – Children will be ranked according to the distance from their home to the North School with those living closest being ranked highest. The distance is measured between the child’s permanent address and the school in a straight line using Ordnance Survey address point data. Distances are measured from a point within the child’s home to a similarly defined point within the school as specified by Ordnance Survey.
Children who live nearer to any other maintained non selective secondary school or academy than The North School :– Children for whom the North School is not their nearest non selective secondary school or academy will be ranked according to the distance from their home to the North School with those living closest being ranked highest. The distance is measured between the child’s permanent address and the school in a straight line using Ordnance Survey address point data. Distances are measured from a point within the child’s home to a similarly defined point within the school as specified by Ordnance Survey.

Waiting lists will be maintained up to January 2014.
Sixth Form Admissions arrangements
Students wishing to join the North School in Year 12 must be able to demonstrate motivation to succeed in their academic studies and to have gained a minimum of six GCSE passes at C grade or above including English. A*-B grades are required in the preferred AS subjects or nearest equivalents. All students are expected to follow a full programme of study. Students from the North School will have priority over those seeking to join the sixth form from other schools. The school welcomes external applications to the basketball academy which has subject specific entry requirements.
Since 2012 new regulations state that pupils are only eligible for free transport to their nearest school.
